The town of Hemel Hempstead is located North East of Gatwick airport a distance of 60 miles that would take around 1hour 5 minutes by taxi via the M25. It is situated in Hertfordshire and has a population of 81,143 according to the 2001 Census.
The towns name during the Saxon and William the Conquerers time was Hemel-Amstede it is thought that the name originated from the land owner when the area first began as a settlement. After the Norman Conquest the land was given to the half brother of William the Conquerer as part of the lands associated with Berkhamstead Castle. It was later owned by Thomas Beckett, the Earl of Cornwall and then to the religious order of the Bonhommes. It was an agricultural market town during most of the 19th Century and with the introduction of the railway became a popular commuter town.
